Neighbourhood O Barreiro

Neighbourhood O Barreiro

A working-class neighbourhood with an European inspiration.
The need to shelter new families of workers from ENDESA coming from other regions of Spain provokes the planning of the fourth residential zone in As Pontes.

The person in charge of this project was the architect José Ramón Miyar Caridad. He plans an architectural complex following the European working-class neighbourhood based on social housing models from the first quarter of the 20th century in Germany and Austria. The German Siedlungen and the Viennese Höfe tried to dignify the working-class home conditions.

Following this model, O Barreiro has 232 homes within an area of 2.5 ha, with 29 buildings of 4 floors. They are placed in three lines, so that a big central square was created for children to play. There were two types of homes, with 3 and 4 bedrooms, with a living/dining room, kitchen with clothesline, bathroom and hall.
