Church of Our Lady of the Light

The church of our first industrial neighbourhood.

The church of Our Lady of the Light is inside the neighbourhood of As Veigas. Its construction was commanded in 1961 by the president of the National Company "Calvo Sotelo", and it was opened in July 1965. It was thought for a capacity of 700 people and it substituted the provisional chapel of the neighbourhood. It is dedicated to the Virgin of the Light, and it is said that the model used for the statue was the president's wife, whose name was Luz (light). On the high altar there is also a statue of St Barbara, patron saint of miners.

It has an eclectic style, with references to Romanesque (semicircular arches), Herreran style (balls over the pedestal and pyramid shaped pinnacles), and local tradition (scallop shell and St James's cross) on the outside. The structure of the building is made of reinforced concrete coated in granite on the outside, and marble on the inside. The historical styles on the outside are in contrast with the modern and useful styles inside.
