Church of Saint Mames
The beautiful parish church of Somede.
The parish of Somede is modern, since it was born in the 19th century together with other 15 parishes from the diocese of Mondoñedo-Ferrol due to demographic changes. Before that, its territory was divided between the parishes of St John in O Freixo and St Mary in As Pontes.
The parish church is opened in 1895 from a chapel dedicated to St Mames of the Horses, already working in the 18th century. In the atrium of the church a Roman altar dedicated to “Lares Viales” (gods of paths) was found, what reinforces the idea of a path used in the Roman times related to the port of Bares and a Roman settlement in As Pontes.
The parish church is opened in 1895 from a chapel dedicated to St Mames of the Horses, already working in the 18th century.
